Out and About

A city with Roman city gates and theatre, fine Romanesque cathedral, medieval walls …

St Romain

Nestled in the valleys of the escarpment close to Beaune – fine wine tasting and buying, excellent restaurant, fascinating old hill-top castle ruins and Roman remains …

Nearest market town just below the massive Cirque de Bout du Monde with its limestone cliffs and dramatic valley….. Nolay has mediaeval heart with all the usual town facilities including an outdoor swimming lake.

Beaune is about 20 minutes drive east of Ivry-en-Montagne and is the wine centre of the Cote d’Or and a beautiful walled town to explore and enjoy at leisure but with all the facilities needed for a good holiday – excellent restaurants, fascinating market and of course the world famous Hospice de Beaune which is one of the wonders of France – with beautiful art, carvings, history and stupendous Burgundian tiled roof.

The ancient site of a Gaulish city on Mont Beuvray in the Morvan National Park;  very modern archaeological visitor centre and numerous site explorations with fine views of the surrounding area.

Surrounded by ramparts, Bibracte was the capital of one of the most powerful peoples in Gaul, the Aedui. It was here that Vercingetorix was proclaimed head of the Gaulish coalition in the year 52 BC and also at Bibracte that Julius Caesar, the victor of Alesia – which saw the vanquish of Vercingetorix and his army -  completed the writing of his "Gallic wars".

A few decades after the Roman conquest, Bibracte was abandoned in favour of Autun, 25 kilometres from Mont Beuvray. If you like archaeology, history, nature, contemporary architecture… a single day won’t be enough to see everything!

Food and Drink

From the heights of fine cuisine to the long traditions of Burgundian delights (Coq au Vin, Oeufs en Meurette, Jambon Persillee, and of course, Boeuf Bourguignon) served in restaurants and Bistros in and around the area the visitor can find food of quality to meet almost any pocket and taste.

Our favourites

Le Vendangerot

At Rully and just a 30 minute drive. Excellent restaurant for celebration or just a bit of TLC!

Auberge des Sources

At Lusigny sur Ouche – traditional auberge food at very modest prices – in the summer eat outside at the side of the river!

Le Benaton

In Beaune – one of the great restaurants of the areas with really fine cuisine - - definitely for a special occasion!

Le Terroir

Place de Jet d’Eau, Santenay – another option for a really good night out – and Santenay is  a lovely place to stroll around as well!

Les Roches

in St Romain  - yet another option for a great night out – with  chance to taste a host of local St Romain vintages!

Caves / Wine Houses

Numerous opportunities to taste and buy wines in some of the famous appellations of the area – Santenay, St Romain, Maranges, Rully, Meursault (and what a lovely place to visit as well), Puligny Montrachet, St Aubin, as well as, north of Beaune some of the great burgundy houses like Chorey les Beaune, Aloxe Corton, Corgoloin, Savigny les Beaune and so on as you travel north along the Cote!

To book a wine tour try:-

In Beaune the co-operative can supply good wines at modest prices as can the Caves de Cheilly (near Cheilly-les-Maranges) – which also happens to be on the side of the canal just south of Santenay. You can easily fill the car here!

Sports and Recreation

Countryside and forest walks / cycling from the Gite – network of paths from Ivry through villages, fields, woods and forests (with a chance to see a wide range of birds and animals including the elusive wild boar).

Walking or cycling along the Canal du Centre (say between Santenay and St Leger-sur-Dheune) or the Canal du Borgogne (e.g. between Colombier and St Marie-sur-Ouche) – visiting wine caves, bars and villages along the way. Look out for signs and information on “voie verte”, the green cycle ways.

Walking cycling and fishing in the Morvan national park – about 45 minutes drive from Ivry

There are open air pools at Nolay, Les Chaumes du Mont (campsite) (15 mins south) and Arnay-le-Duc, Etang Fouché (campsite).

A course just down the road at Golf de Beaune Levernois (3 kms south-east of Beaune) see for facilities and green fees and other courses can be located on

Grande Randonnées Routes

A number of the Burgundian grandes randonnées pass close to Ivry-en-Montagne and provide tremendous views from the escarpment and ridges which mark the change in landscape between the Ivry area and the vineyards and villages of the Cote de Beaune just to the east.

Further afield

A couple of hours drive to the east is the Jura with tremendous walking, fishing, canoeing, wines, cheeses and, of course, stupendous landscapes with some (more) very attractive towns and villages.
